The story of supa a Civita

‘Supa a Civita’ is one of those phrases that, in Lipari, needs no explanation: just say it and everyone knows where you are going. In everyday Lipari parlance, ‘supa’ means ‘above’, while “Civita” is the Citadel — the ancient heart of the island, the fortified rock that dominates the town and the sea, also called the Acropolis or simply ‘u Castieddu’.

To get there, you have to climb a hill that is almost a ritual, known to many as ‘a scinnuta i supa a Civita’: a steep, lively road with houses leaning against the rock and walls that seem to tell, stone by stone, how many people have walked there before us. It is one of those climbs that you take slowly, looking around you, because every glimpse is an invitation to slow down and really feel Lipari.

And when you arrive in Supa, you understand why this saying has become a point of reference. Some of the island's most precious wonders are concentrated here: Lipari Castle, with its panoramic views of the blue sea; the Luigi Bernabò Brea Aeolian Archaeological Museum, where the history of the Aeolian Islands spans millennia, from prehistory to the Greek and Roman ages; the Cathedral of St. Bartholomew and the Norman Cloister, which transform a walk into a journey through time. And then there is the area around Piazza Mazzini and the municipal building, once a monastery, with its arched portal that seems to mark a threshold: crossing it is like entering the most authentic Lipari.   This is why “Supa a Civita” is not just a geographical indication: it is an invitation. It is the Lipari way of saying “come up, there is something to see, to understand, to feel”. And it is precisely from this invitation that the name of our B&B comes from: Supa a Civita. Because we are in the centre of Lipari, a stone's throw from its most ancient soul, and because we want to welcome you with the same promise contained in that phrase: that of a special place, to be discovered with a curious eye and a light step, as one does on islands that remain in the heart.

The Building

In the heart of Lipari, just a stone's throw from the most authentic alleyways and the energy of the town centre, stands a newly renovated building that has undergone significant work to transform it into a prestigious B&B: refined, bright and deeply connected to the Lipari style.   The rooms welcome guests with discreet elegance: clean lines, quality materials, and attention to detail in every corner. The Sicilian character is immediately recognisable in the details — handmade ceramics, references to lava stone, Mediterranean-toned fabrics, natural essences, and small decorative objects that recount the island's tradition with contemporary taste. The ceramic jars, unique pieces handmade in Santo Stefano di Camastro, have been set into the wall to create Liparoto-style bedside tables that are unique in the world! Every space is designed to make you feel like you are in a special, pleasantly new place, where comfort and beauty coexist in harmony.   The heart of the house is the breakfast room on the panoramic terrace: a place that opens up to the sky and the sea, where the morning smells wonderful and the light of the Aeolian Islands makes everything more intense. Here, breakfast becomes a moment to remember: sitting outdoors, breathing in the salty air, looking down on Lipari and starting the day calmly, surrounded by authentic flavours and an enchanting view.

The five rooms, each with its own identity, are a small world of comfort and charm. The rooms have been designed exclusively for our B&B and are one of a kind. The distinctive feature? Each room is decorated with bougainvillea plants, which are ubiquitous throughout Lipari, embellishing and brightening up the rooms and creating a unique atmosphere: a perfect blend of art, tradition and hospitality. Three rooms also have a kitchenette, ideal for those who want independence without compromising on style and quality.

The tables on the terraces are made of typical lava stone from Mount Etna, unique pieces handcrafted in Santo Stefano di Camastro, a town famous for the production of these artefacts. Every detail is designed for the well-being of guests: air-conditioned rooms, soundproofing, comfortable beds, private bathrooms with attention to materials and finishes, modern amenities and services designed to make your stay simple and pleasant, from the first night to the last.

A new B&B, but with an ancient soul: that of Lipari, its light and its Mediterranean elegance. A place to return to, even if only in memory.
